Hundreds of people with a wide range of denominational affiliations serve as volunteers in the ministry at the Cook County Jail. Some serve inside the jail and others serve outside the jail. These volunteers are involved in listening, counseling, prayer, distributing literature, grading Bible lessons, teaching, preaching, follow-up, aftercare, fundraising, public and church relations, and special events. God's Word demands those who are part of His body to conduct themselves as a body (1 Co. 12:14-26). This does not mean that all doctrinal distinctives are to be thrown out for the sake of unity. Instead, it means that there must be a body of truth to which all adhere to without wavering and are committed to proclaiming within the institution. The chaplain and Chaplain for Christ volunteers must minister with agreement according to the following foundational truths:
- Bible is from God -II Tim. 3:16 (II Tim. 3:15-17)
- Fall of Man - Rom. 5:12
- Christ is God - John 10:30 (John 10:25-33)
- Sacrifice of Christ - I Pet. 3:18
- Salvation of Man - John 3:16 (John 3:14-17)
- Return of Christ - Acts 1:11 (Acts 1:6-11)
- The Resurrection - I Co. 15:20 (I Co. 15:12-23)
